A three-foot shark washed up on the shore at Jax Beach Saturday and gave beachgoers yet another reason to be on alert when swimming in the ocean this summer.
The shark was found on the shore around 11 a.m. Beachgoers said the shark appeared to have been caught by a fisherman and thrown back into the water. Beach patrol picked up the shark and removed it from the beach.
This incident comes just two days after a local fisherman caught two sharks from the pier at Jax Beach and said she won't go into the ocean because of the threat of sharks in the water.
Scientist's say sharks are moving through the area in search of food.
There have been several shark attacks in the Atlantic Ocean in recent weeks, the most prominent being two North Carolina shark attacks that occurred within two hours and two miles of each other.
In those attacks, a 12-year-old girl from Asheboro, N.C. lost part of her arm and suffered a leg injury, and a 16-year-old boy from Colorado Springs had to have his arm amputated.
Lifeguards at Jax Beach said they weren't aware of any shark sightings when asked about it last week. If these pictures are any indication, it's safe to say Jax Beach has its first official shark sighting of the summer.
