A prisoner, who was completely shackled, attempted to escape from police custody Friday night at a Beaver County medical facility by climbing into the ceiling, authorities said.
According to the Beaver County police sheriff, the Beaver County Jail inmate, who was later identified as Chad Wimer, complained of chest pains and was taken to the Heritage Valley Beaver Medical Center. While in the treatment area, Wimer got nauseous and was taken to a bathroom still fully shackled.
The sheriff said that while in the bathroom, Wimer managed to lock the door and climb into the ceiling. Due to the manner in which the duct work is designed, Wimer was contained to a small area and found about 35 feet away from where he entered the ceiling, police said.
A sheriff's deputy told Channel 11's Pamela Osborne that Wimer surrendered when officers brought in K-9s.
The sheriff said Wimer remained at the medical center Friday night for treatment. The reason for Wimer's original imprisonment was not released.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing and additional charges against Wimer are pending.
