A Maryland 7-year-old was hospitalized and his school tutor suspended pending an investigation into how the boy suffered a fractured jaw and several missing teeth during an incident at school.
Trayvon Grayson's mother, Lateekqua Jackson, is accusing the tutor at City Springs Elementary School in Baltimore of throwing her son against a wall, causing the fractured jaw. According to Fox 45 in Baltimore, Trayvon also lost two teeth and had another tooth pushed into his gums.
"I looked into the ambulance and there's my son, his face big, mouth bloody," Jackson told the news station. "I turned to the man, I said, 'This isn't regular restraint.'"
Fox 45 reported that the tutor, an employee of Baltimore Curriculum Project, the charter group that runs the school, told district officials that he was carrying Trayvon from the classroom because he was being disruptive when he lost his footing.
Trayvon “hit himself” on the wall, the unnamed employee said.
The school district and Baltimore police are investigating the incident, which left Trayvon hospitalized for multiple days, Fox 45 reported.
Jackson said she does not believe the employee’s explanation of how her son was injured.
“He can’t throw himself into the wall and fracture his jaw and lose his teeth,” she said. “He’s only 7 years old. He’s so small. He’s not going to do the damage to himself.”
Baltimore Curriculum Project issued a statement to the news station on Wednesday, stating that officials are "heartsick" that Trayvon was injured at school.
"We pray for his complete and quick recovery and for his family as well," the statement read. "This is an unusual, isolated incident for our schools, and we are participating in a thorough investigation into what exactly happened. Until that investigation is complete, the one employee involved has been suspended, and we are not able to make any further statements."
