Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has irked some animal rights activists for a picture she posted on her Facebook and Instagram pages that shows Palin's 6-year-old son standing on a dog.

The picture was posted on New Year's Day and featured Palin's youngest child Trig standing atop a black Labrador as the child reaches the kitchen sink.
In the post, Palin writes:

Happy New Year!

May 2015 see every stumbling block turned into a stepping stone on the path forward. Trig just reminded me. He, determined to help wash dishes with an oblivious mama not acknowledging his signs for "up!", found me and a lazy dog blocking his way. He made his stepping stone.- Sarah Palin

Palin's Facebook post has more than 25,000 comments, many of which are critical of the treatment of the dog.

The president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals joined the criticism by telling the Oregonian newspaper, "PETA simply believes that people shouldn't step on dogs, and judging by the reaction that we've seen to Sarah Palin's Instagram photo, we're far from alone in that belief," Ingrid Newkirk said.

In a reply to PETA, Palin posted another Facebook entry in which she features a picture of a child standing on a dog that was posted by talk show host Ellen Degeneres.

Dear PETA,Chill. At least Trig didn't eat the dog.Hey, by the way, remember your "Woman of the Year", Ellen DeGeneres? Did you get all wee-wee'd up when she posted this sweet picture?
