Will Smith, the Saints player gunned down in an apparent road rage incident late Saturday night, was secretly selected to the team’s Hall of Fame last month.
The announcement for the fall induction was planned for May 17.
With Smith’s death, the team still plans to honor him.
“The Saints Hall of Fame will proceed with the announcement and induction at a date to be determined in honor of Smith's tremendous contribution to the success of the New Orleans Saints,” according to a release.
Smith, 34, played nine seasons with the Saints. He was selected to the Pro Bowl, won the NFC championship in 2006 and notched a Super Bowl win in 2009.
