A rare and adorable Corgi-German Shepherd mix on the brink of death was saved by a Pittsburgh-area animal rescue group, and now the group needs help so they can save more dogs like Max.
Pittsbrugh radio show “The Freak Show” on 96.1 KISS took a call and email from one volunteer at Animals Against The Odds Rescue & Rehab, Inc. Thursday morning.
Lorie shared Max’s story. Here’s what she wrote to Mikey and Big Bob:
"I volunteer at Animals Against The Odds Rescue & Rehab, Inc. We are a non-profit, all volunteer organization that was originally started by a 10-year-old girl from the South Hills.
They rescued a litter of puppies from the brink of death, and syringe fed them until they were healthy. They were transferred to another foster home, where unfortunately, five puppies were stolen! The most unique and amazing one was Max, who looks like a full size German Shepherd head and tail, on stumpy little Corgi legs!
Long story short, five months later we got a call from the Humane Society that after scanning his microchip, they realized they had one of our puppies, who was sick!
Little Max was missing for five months and obviously was not well cared for. By the time we got him back, he was missing 3/4 of his hair, had a skin infection, ears infected, flea and tapeworm infestation, Kennel cough, and no vet records or indication he was ever seen by a vet for rabies shot, etc. And was now too sick to even get vaccinated.
A few days later the Kennel Cough turned into pneumonia. His fever was 104.3, which is dangerously high. He was rushed to PVSEC and admitted into intensive care. He had to have oxygen tubes stitched to his nose and head, and two I.V. lines in his legs. It was so sad and truly scared because they didn't know if he was gonna make it through the night. We just got him back. We couldn't lose him again. Needless to say it was a long, heart wrenching night!
Anyhow, I am happy to say that Max survived, and again cheated death. He has a long road to recovery, but we are committed to doing whatever it takes to get this poor, sweet "little dude" the healthy, happy ending he deserves! That is where you guys could REALLY help us and Max!
So far just Max's vet bills are over $3,000 and he still has several more vet visits to get ready for adoption.
Unless or until we can pay off his huge unexpected vet bills, we can't save any more animals.”
