- Speaking out on misogyny: follow the discussion.
A cofounder of the website Rap Genius, which attempts to interpret all rap lyrics, is out of a job today after he made objectionable remarks about the manifesto written by California mass killer Elliot Rodger.
A statement from the site’s CEO, Tom Lehman, says that the site decided to post Rodger’s screed and enable visitors to annotate it.
But the annotations by Mahbod Moghadam, one of three cofounders of the site, “not only didn’t attempt to enhance anyone’s understanding of the text, but went beyond that into gleeful insensitivity and misogyny.
Moghadam's comments have been taken down. According to a report on recode.net, he said:
“Elliot barely mentions his sister, Georgia.
“Toward the end, however, he tells us that they did not get along and becomes extremely angry when he hears her having sex with her boyfriend.
“MY GUESS: his sister is smokin hot.”
Moghadam also remarked at one point that Rodger’s manifesto was “beautifully written.”
“In light of this, Mahbod has resigned – both in his capacity as an employee of the company, and as a member of our board of directors, effective immediately,” said the note from Lehman, the CEO. “Mahbod is my friend. He’s a brilliant, creative, complicated person with a ton of love in his heart."
