Purina has issued a voluntary recall of a limited number of wet cat food products after complaints of rubber pieces in the product.
The Food and Drug Administration said in a March 29 news release that the recall is being conducted out of an abundance of caution.
Nestle Purina PetCare Company’s Muse wet cat food Natural Chicken Recipe in Gravy is subject to the recall. The specific recalled product is in single, 3-ounce tin cans and contains the UPC code 38100 17199.
"We're pet owners and pet lovers, and our number one commitment is the health and well-being of pets," the company said in a March 29 news release. "We only want products that meet our high-quality standards in your pet's bowl.
“We became aware of the issue after receiving complaints from pet owners who observed the rubber pieces in the product. We have made changes to our process so this should not happen in the future.”
Purina said it has not gotten reports of any injuries or illnesses from cat owners who fed the product to their pets.
Customers with the affected product should discard them and contact Purina for a replacement.
“You can identify the product by the UPC, production code and ‘Best By’ date (APR2020) on the bottom of the can,” the company said. “If you purchased a variety pack, only the Natural Chicken Recipe in Gravy cans are included in the recall.”
Retailers with the affected products have been asked to remove them. No other products are impacted by the recall.
Customers can contact Purina at 1-800-982-3885 24 hours a day if they have any questions.
