Protesters rally against Alabama immigration bill

Immigration law protestors gather outside the Alabama Statehouse in Montgomery, Ala., Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012. About 400 demonstrators protested House Bill 56 which is considered one of the strongest immigration laws in the nation. Gov. Nathan Deal signed HB 87 -- similar to Alabama's bill -- into law in May, hailing it as a victory for taxpayers who have borne the cost of illegal immigration in Georgia.

Protesters chanted in English and Spanish before moving into the Statehouse Tuesday to deliver heart-shaped lollipops and Valentine's cards calling for the law's repeal.

Alabama legislators say a bill will be introduced in the coming weeks to make subtle changes to the law but that it won't be overhauled.

The president of the Alabama Federation of Republican Women said in a statement that the law is working to lower unemployment.
