Royal watchers now know how much the renovations to Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s, cottage cost England’s taxpayers.

The royal household's latest financial statement said the cost to renovate the house was £2.4 million or $3 million in U.S. currency, CNN reported.

Some of the changes made to the Windsor Estate cottage included changing five small dormitories into a single-family home with the latest in modern features.

The home itself dates back to the Victorian era, The Associated Press reported.

It apparently needed repairs according to the bookkeeper of the royal family’s accounts.

"The property had not been the subject of work for some years and had already been earmarked for renovation in line with our responsibility to maintain the condition of the occupied royal palaces estate," Michael Stevens, keeper of the Privy Purse, told the AP.

The home also needed a chimney removed, the roof refinished and new staircases installed.

The renovations were paid for by the Sovereign Grant, but the fittings, fixtures and furnishings were paid for by Prince Harry and Meghan, CNN reported.

Some are not happy that millions were spent on the royal couple’s home and other royal spending.

"This year's increases are outrageous at a time of widespread spending cuts. But this is just one detail in a litany of scandal," Graham Smith, head of the anti-monarchy group Republic, said in a statement to CNN.
