Pope Francis apologized to the crowd in St. Peter's Square after getting stuck in an elevator caused him to arrive seven minutes late.

Pope Francis said Sunday he was stuck for 25 minutes in a Vatican elevator, ABC News reported.

The 82-year-old pontiff had to be rescued by firefighters, according to The Associated Press.

Francis apologized to crowds in St. Peter's Square on Sunday for arriving seven minutes late to his traditional noon appointment with the public, the AP reported.

"I have to beg your pardon," Francis smiled as he addressed the crowd.

He asked the crowd to applaud the firefighters who liberated him from the elevator, the AP reported.
