Investigators are still working to determine why Jason Dalton, whom neighbors described as a family man, went on an alleged rampage Saturday in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
"There is some information out there about what was happening (in Dalton's life)," Kalamazoo prosecutor Jeff Getting told The New York Times. "You know, of course, it doesn't come anywhere near to explain what he's done."
>>Who is Jason Dalton, accused Kalamazoo mass shooter?
Dalton is accused of injuring two people and killing six others in a trail of violence that spanned more than four hours and occurred at three separate locations around the city.
Dalton has no criminal record. The victims were randomly targeted, according to investigators.
"There is no connection that we're aware of between the three sets of victims to either or any of the victims to Mr. Dalton," Getting told the Detroit Free Press. "They appear to have been chosen at random, because they were available."
The violence started around 6 p.m. Saturday when a woman was gunned down in an apartment complex parking lot. A father and son were killed at a car dealership around 10 p.m. About 15 minutes later, five people were shot in a Cracker Barrel parking lot. Four people die and a 14-year-old girl was critically injured.
Dalton kept picking up fares as an Uber driver even as a manhunt was ramping up.
A man, identified only as Derek, told NPR that he, his wife and parents-in-law got a ride from Dalton from a brewery and were dropped off at a nearby hotel around 12:20 a.m. Sunday.
"I jokingly said to the driver, 'You aren't the shooter, are you?'" Derek said. "And he either shook his head or said no, and I said, 'Are you sure?' And his response wasn't like what you would expect, like a laugh, like a 'No, not me.' It was just very calm and quiet: 'I'm just tired. No, I'm just tired.'"
A Kalamazoo County sheriff's deputy stopped the car thought to be the gunman's around 12:45 a.m. Sunday. Investigators found a semi-automatic weapon in the vehicle that appeared to match one used in the shootings, according to The New York Times. Investigators are searching Dalton's phone for more evidence.
Authorities took Dalton into custody without incident.
"He seemed pretty even-tempered," Getting told the Detroit Free Press. "He did not present in a combative way or an emotional way at all."
