Two officers were shot and taken to the hospital after responding to a report of a person with a gun in the Orient Heights area of East Boston.

According to Boston Police Commissioner William Evans, one of the officers is in critical condition at Massachusetts General Hospital after being shot multiple times. The other officer is in stable condition. Neither officer’s name has been released.

The incident began around 10:51 p.m. Wednesday at 136 Gladstone St. when officers responded to the home. Within 15 minutes there were reports of an officer shot. Residents were asked to shelter in place for more than an hour while police were in the area.

Just after midnight, Evans announced that the suspect was dead inside the home and the shelter in place order was lifted.

Evans and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh are at Massachusetts General Hospital and are expected to update the situation overnight.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the two officers shot, their friends, family, and all of the Boston Police Department.
