An Oregon man was arrested after police said he was found after falling out of a car, which he said was part of a kidnapping hoax to get cash from his mother.
John R. McPhail, 57, fell out of the vehicle around 10 a.m. Sunday in what appeared to be kidnapping near Portland, KOIN reports. Witnesses called 911 after finding McPhail with his hands bound behind his body and a bag over his head.
Police said witnesses saw two men get out of the Dodge Neon after McPhail tumbled out of it, but when they noticed people watching them, they retreated back to the car. KOIN reports McPhail told police that he had been kidnapped, but officers noticed that his story didn’t line up.
The Oregonian reports police searched his home on Sunday and McPhail confessed to the entire affair being a set-up in order to get ransom money from his mother. Police said no money was transferred between the mother and the fake kidnappers. He was arrested on charges of initiating a false report and conspiracy to commit theft.
