A woman in Orlando was arrested after leaving her 2-year-old twin boys home alone to go downtown with friends, WESH reports.
Neighbors told police they saw two toddlers playing near a lake around 8 p.m. Saturday, and had to grab one of them who almost fell into the water. They then took the children to their apartment but no one was home.
When an officer arrived at the home, he “noticed a soiled diaper outside a bathroom, a pile of toys and a bottle of toilet bowl cleaner inside the bathroom and a bookshelf lying in the middle of the family room,” the police report states.
After the officer attempted to contact the renter, he received a call back from a woman named Kiria Ferris, 29, who initially said she was on her way home from work and would be there soon. She arrived at the home at around 10 p.m. wearing a party dress and a red wristband.
Ferris told police she left her kids home alone because she was unable to get hold of the boy’ father to watch them. She also said she used a piece of plywood to put against the door to lock her kids inside the apartment and didn’t intend to be gone for very long.
Police arrested Ferris “because of the numerous choking hazards and harmful chemicals within reach of the children and Ferris’ failure to provide care, supervision and services necessary to maintain the children’s physical and mental health,” the police report states.
Ferris faces two counts of child neglect and the twin boys were taken to their grandmother.
