Two-year-old Finley Smallwood just likes to dance.
However, the toddler, who was born 9-weeks premature and suffers from cerebral palsy, can barely move without help.
She is in physical therapy and uses a walker to get around. She was recently fitted for a wheelchair, but her parents also learned she is a good candidate for selective dorsal rhizotomy, a surgery offered by a hospital in St. Louis that could have Finley walking on her own again.
But Christina and Josh Smallwood would need at least $50,000 for the surgery, which is not covered by insurance.
A family friend helped them come up with an idea after seeing Finley dance to the Meaghan Trainor song "Better When I'm Dancin,'" according to KTLA.
So, the Dare to Dance challenge and a crowdsource funding website was created to raise $60,000 to help pay for the surgery and a rental RV to drive back from it to Corona, California.
"This has been a week out of this video, and we're already halfway to a goal, which I thought was a pretty lofty goal, I mean $60,000 to raise is a lot of money," Josh Smallwood told KABC.
In addition to the numerous donations, the Smallwoods the challenge has gained the attention of the Covina Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department and the KTLA news crew, who all created dance videos in support.
"All we ask is that people just dance for Finley," Christina Smallwood told KTLA.
