Pit bulls attack, kill Texas teen who apparently was trespassing, police say

Three pit bulls mauled a Texas teen to death while he was allegedly trespassing in an Irving homeowner's backyard, authorities said.

According to The Associated Press, Irving police responded to calls about a possible dog attack outside the Third Street home around 4:45 a.m. Saturday.

"The officers jumped the fence, put themselves between the victim and the dogs in an attempt to stop the attack," the department said in a news release. "The dogs attacked the officers, and they fired their duty weapons to protect themselves and the victim."

Emergency crews took the 16-year-old to a nearby hospital, where he later died, police said. Authorities have not publicly identified the boy, who "does not live at the residence," police said.

One of the pit bulls was shot and later euthanized, the AP reported. The remaining two dogs are now at the Irving Animal Shelter, authorities said.

A dog bit one of the responding officers, who has been treated, police said.
