A 24-year-old Peace Corps volunteer was found dead Saturday in Panama with an unknown cause of death.
Cody Oser, of Broomfield, Colorado, was found in a stream in Ngabe Bugle, Panama, where he served in the Peace Corps.
According to The Associated Press, the area is a rural region of mostly indigenous people. Local members of the community found Oser's body, according to the AP.
Oser’s cause of death is unclear, and officials are investigating. Oser’s body showed no visible wounds, and his money, wallet and cellphone were still with him.
“Cody’s enthusiasm for helping others and knack for problem solving were remarkable and are a few of the many reasons he was so well-liked among fellow volunteers and in his community,” Peace Corps acting director Sheila Crowley said. “His impressive engineering skills made him stand out as a volunteer because he dedicated himself to working with communities around the world to find solutions to their technological needs. His passing is a profound loss for the Peace Corps community as we mourn along with his family and friends.”
According to a statement released Sunday by the Peace Corps, Oser volunteered in Kenya and El Salvador before joining the Peace Corps.
“Cody ... was excited to use his skills to find unconventional ways to bring technology to communities around the world,” the statement said.
Oser graduated in 2015 from Colorado State University, where he earned a degree in civil engineering. He also studied international development.
According to the Denver Post, Oser joined the Peace Corps last September.
Oser is survived by his parents and two siblings.
