Police are investigating the death of a Maine Medical Center patient who fell from a window on the hospital's sixth floor Tuesday evening.
Authorities did not identify the person, although Maine Medical Center spokesman Clay Hotlzman told the Portland Press Herald it was a male patient at the hospital. He fell from Richards Tower.
Portland police were notified of the incident around 5:10 p.m. and opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, the newspaper reported.
"Our thoughts go out first and foremost to the individual's family during this very difficult time, as well as our shocked and deeply saddened staff," a hospital spokesperson told WMTW. "While the investigation is ongoing, all of our thoughts are focused on the individual, their family and others impacted by this tragic event."
Maine Medical Center is the state's largest medical center with 637 beds and more than 6,000 employees.
