One person is dead and two others were injured after a man killed himself after shooting two other people inside a home on Fallon Boulevard and Babcock Street, police said.
A 17-year-old boy called 911 at 7:10 a.m., saying he had been shot in the leg, Palm Bay police Chief Nelson Moya said. Another call came in moments later from a man saying he wanted to commit suicide, Moya said.
When officers arrived at the scene, the man had barricaded himself inside the home, police said.
A woman suffering a gunshot wound exited the home on the 1600 block of Fallon Boulevard, Moya said. Police said they found the man dead inside the home and believe he killed himself.
The teenager and the woman were hospitalized in stable condition.
Moya said the attempted murder-suicide was a domestic violence-related incident.
"It was very scary to wake up to this," neighbor Tracy Ataman told WFTV. "It's something you don't expect to happen in your own backyard."
Neighbor Marcia Powell said she heard a gunshot, but she thought it was a car backfiring.
"We never would have expected it," Powell said.
The names of those involved have not been released.
Port Malabar Elementary School was placed on lockdown, but it has since been lifted. The school has been put on "shelter in place."
Brevard County Schools earlier released this statement:
"A parent notification is going out right now, as Port Malabar has now been put on a shelter in place. They were on lockdown earlier – due PBPD's instructions. This is due to a shooting in the neighborhood which was unfolding during arrival time.
"School staff worked to get students into school as quickly as they could, before the lockdown was issued. They were just told to move to a shelter in place which will allow normal school operations to resume. Cars are still holding the loop to let children out, which will resume once PD gives the all clear to do so."
No further information has been released.
