Gunman Christopher Harper Mercer opened fire inside a classroom, killing nine people, before committing suicide Thursday.

His family released a statement Saturday about the shooting, which also injured nine others at Umpqua Community College, according to KPTV.

"We are shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific events that unfolded," the family wrote in a statement released to KPTV by a spokesperson. "Our thoughts, our hearts and our prayers go out to all of the families of those who died and were injured."

The attack occurred during the first week of classes in Roseburg. The college is closed, but officials said they hope to open early next week.

The gunman's father spoke briefly with reporters Thursday night outside of his Los Angeles-area home.
