An Ohio man was arrested twice within three hours on suspicion of driving under the influence in a Cleveland suburb, police said.
Jay Merriweather, of Cleveland, was arrested by Newburgh Heights police at 4;15 a.m. Monday after failing sobriety tests after a traffic stop, WKYC reported.
According to a police report, authorities found a small bag of white powder, a small scale, 36 small plastic baggies and a blue pill in a plastic bag in Merriweather's vehicle, WJW reported. Merriweather admitted the powder was cocaine, according to police.
Merriweather was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, driving with no headlights and possessing drug paraphernalia, the television station reported. His license was then suspended, police said.
Merriweather was released on a personal bond at 7 a.m. and into the custody of his girlfriend, police said. However, police were surprised when Merriweather got behind the wheel of the car and began to drive away, WKYC reported.
Police caught Merriweather a few blocks from the station and arrested him on another OVI charge and for driving without a valid driver's license. Police said Merriweather did not understand why he was being arrested a second time, WJW reported.
"He knew his license was suspended and yet he still drove away from the parking lot of the station," Newburgh Heights Police Chief John T. Majoy told WKYC. "While the second arrest was several hours later, he was still under the influence. Not that there is a good time. But there couldn't been a worse time because there was more traffic."
According to an arrest report, Merriweather's blood-alcohol-content was .109 and the second was .102, WJW reported. The legal limit in Ohio is 0.08.
