The Kettering Police Department is asking for volunteers who would be interested in collecting the bodies of deer hit and killed within the city.
In a Facebook post, Kettering police explained that every year multiple deer are struck and killed in the city, so the "Deer Strike" call list would try to put those resources to good use and allow residents to claim them for consumption rather than being wasted.
According to ODOT, in 2018 there were 18,302 deer collision crashes reported in Ohio.
Once the list is made, when a deer is struck and killed, dispatchers will call numbers on the list until they reach someone willing to claim it. The resident will then go meet the officer on the scene, receive a free Ohio Division of Natural Resources Deer Tag.
From there, the resident is responsible for processing the deer themselves or taking it elsewhere to be processed.
Police added that there are a few warnings with being on the list. First, if temperatures are warm there won’t be very much time to salvage the meat. Also, many deer strikes happen late at night or early in the morning, so people on the list may receive calls at odd times.
