Residents across the Northeast are digging out from a strong new year's winter storm. Now they're being greeted by bitterly cold temperatures.
Many parts of the Philadelphia area got between six and nine inches of snow Friday — trapping people inside their homes. But the snow was even worse in areas up north. (Via KYW-TV)
WHDH reports more than 18 inches of snow walloped parts of the Boston area before midnight Friday night. On Saturday morning, temperatures fell well below zero. In Orange, Mass. it was -15 degrees.
Crews at Boston's Logan Airport worked Friday to clear all the runways. WCVB reports the airport expects to work at full capacity Saturday helping thousands of stranded travelers get home after the holidays.
The Boston Globe reports Logan Airport saw 331 flight cancellations. A little further south, Newark Airport had 337 cancellations, and LaGuardia Airport saw 356 flight cancellations.
Unfortunately, the winter weather isn't over quite yet.
A so-called "polar vortex" is expected to come down from Canada over the next couple days. Fox News reports Chicago's low on Monday is expected to be -18 while Green Bay could get down to -19.
The Weather Channel notes it's expected to be the coldest blast of winter air in 20 years.
The record-breaking cold looks like it might be too much for Green Bay Packer fans. For the first time since 1983, Lambeau Field will not have a sellout crowd ahead of Sunday's big playoff game against the 49ers. (Via Time)
And the dangerous weather has turned deadly. CNN reports at least seven people have died from the snowstorm and frigid conditions.
In Chicago, public schools are expected to be open early next week even though WLS-TV reports an expected high of -9 Monday and lows forecast to be near -20.
