A new mom is experiencing both the joy of being a mother and the tragedy of losing both her mom and fiance in a horrific crash.
Crystal Matrau-Belt, 24, delivered her son a week ahead of her due date after several complications. Her high blood pressure led doctors to induce labor at a Michigan hospital.
According to the Kalamazoo Gazette, she texted her fiance, Emil Skokan III, and told him to come to the hospital.
He texted back that he’d be there soon and he loved her. That was the last she heard from him.
Emil was driving himself and Crystal’s mother, Peggy Nichols, to the hospital for the birth when he lost control of the car.
After giving birth via C-section, her stepfather broke the tragic news to her.
“Losing two of the most important people in my life at the same time as bringing a child into the world, it’s like happy and the most heartbreaking thing,” Crystal told The Kalamazoo Gazette. “I waited so long to be able to have a child, and to have a child but then have two things ripped out of my life, it’s just really hard to deal with and even process.”
She said her mother and her fiance were two of the most important people in her life.
“I loved my mom and I loved Emil with all my heart,” said Crystal. “Things like this just don’t happen.”
