A community is rallying behind a 16-year-old charged with the murder of her mother’s boyfriend.

Deanna Watson, 16, is charged with felony murder for allegedly stabbing Omar Dunbar, 36, inside the apartment she lived in with her mother and siblings.

Dozens of neighbors gathered in a courtyard behind the apartment Sunday passing out fliers and trying to raise money for her defense. A fundraising site was setup to also help.

Neighbors sold food and painted faces to show support for Watson.

Neighbors said the stabbing was in self-defense.

Officers said there were at least four children inside the home, all under the age of 13, when the stabbing happened.

Watson ran to her neighbor’s home after police said she stabbed Dunbar to death.

Many neighbors said Watson would run to their apartments when she was trying to get away from him.

Police received three domestic violence calls to the home leading up to the fatal stabbing.

Neighbors are trying to support Watson, who is being held on $1 million bond.

“As a community we have to stand up for our youth and she don't deserve this because she was taking care of her siblings. She fought for her siblings,” said neighbor Valerie Huntley.

A public defender is being assigned to her case, but neighbors hope to raise money for an attorney to help reduce charges and Watson's bond.
