The official Facebook page for the Naval Medical Center in San Diego posted a warning Tuesday morning that an active shooter had been reported at the facility shortly after 8 a.m. PST.
They advised all occupants to "run, hide or fight."
A Navy spokesperson told CNN that the report of shots fired at the center came from a single witness, who is now being interviewed by authorities.
No injuries have been reported.
At approximately 1:30 p.m. EST, Reuters reported that according to the Navy, an initial inspection found no sign of a gunman or evidence of a shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
The warning on the Naval Medical Center San Diego's Facebook page triggered a massive law enforcement response.
A local news report indicated that shots had been fired outside of a building at the facility.
Schools in the immediate area were placed on lockdown temporarily.
Naval Medical Center San Diego is a 272-bed multi-specialty hospital and ambulatory complex located in San Diego, Calif. Its 1.2 million square feet includes 11 primary care clinics, dental clinics, 18 operating rooms and recreational facilities. More than 6,500 military and civilian workers are employed there, including 400 physicians. According to the hospital's website, NMCSD personnel deploy to Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait. The facility has the only Navy Medicine amputee center in the Western Pacific, and treats vets for post-traumatic stress.
