Rescue crews worked to remove a man who was stuck in what firefighters were calling a "confined space" early Wednesday morning in northeast Charlotte, North Carolina.
Firefighters were called out just before 7:25 a.m.
Paramedics said the man fell into a deep hole and were sending a medical helicopter.
Firefighters told WSOC that the man may have been stuck in the 7-foot-deep hole since before sunrise.
He was dirty and wet when they got to him, but did say he was talking.
The man was renovating a house in the area, according to his co-worker. He heard the man screaming when he arrived at the work site just after 7 a.m.
The man's co-worker told WSOC that the holes were dug Tuesday and were not covered.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, five holes were dug by subcontractors working with a construction company that is building a light rail project.
The holes have since been covered with construction barrels.
A neighbor provided WSOC with cellphone video of the man stuck in the hole. He said he heard the man screaming and when he came out of his home he found the man up to his neck in the hole.
