A mother and her 3-year-old son were critically injured when a giraffe trampled them after they may have gotten too close to the giraffe’s two-month-old calf.

Dr. Katy Williams and her husband Dr. Sam Williams work and live on the Blyde Wildlife Estate near Hoedspruit, South Africa, Fox News reported.

Sam Williams was returning to the house from work Monday evening and saw his wife and son being attacked by the female giraffe. He confronted the animal and scared it off, saving his family.

Experts believe the animal was protecting its baby from a perceived threat by Katy Williams and her son Finn when they surprised her, Fox News reported.

The Sun is reporting that Finn may have permanent brain damage as a result of the attack.

Both he and his mother have undergone surgeries. Family members say Katy Williams was put into a medically induced coma because of multiple injuries, The Sun reported.

Both were listed in critical but stable condition in Johannesburg.
