Authorities in California said more than 100 cars were conducting illegal sideshow activity Thursday night in an area of downtown Sacramento.

Sideshows are informal demonstrations of automotive stunts, usually held in vacant lots or at city intersections.

Capt. Norm Leong, of the Sacramento Police Department, tweeted "at least" 100 vehicles were doing the stunts before officers arrived at the scene. By the time police arrived, the amateur stunt drivers had left, KCRA reported.

Sacramento Police Lt. Marnie Stigerts told KTXL the drivers had gathered at a parking lot under an interstate highway.

Stigerts said the gathering could have been to honor actor Paul Walker of the "Fast and Furious" film franchise, the television station reported. Walker was killed Nov. 30, 2013, in an automobile crash in Valencia, California.
