A 10-month-old baby is in serious but stable condition after being trapped in a car that caught fire while his mother went inside a pizza restaurant.

The child might have died if an off-duty paramedic had not heard the commotion and run to the scene to give him CPR. (Source: KY3.com)

The woman went inside a Papa Murphy’s pizza store with her daughter for 10 to 15 minutes, according to witnesses. They left the building but ran back in seconds later, the woman carrying the baby.

Witnesses said the baby was covered in ash and not breathing when he was rushed in.

Fire officials said they were investigating but could not immediately determine why the interior of the car caught fire.
