Mom dies day after burying daughter killed in alleged abuse

A day after burying her 2-year-old daughter, Veronica McGee has died. Sources close to the family confirmed the news to WHBQ.

Lyric McGee died at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital last week just days after sustaining injuries to her arm and abdomen.

According to a police affidavit, she was injured by her father, Christopher Presley at their Memphis, Tennessee, home.

In an interview with WHBQ, Veronica said she was battling Lupus.

After suffering a seizure, she went to the hospital and left Lyric in Presley’s care.

On March 18, she was going to pick her daughter up when she got a call from Presley.

"He was like, 'You need to come down to the hospital. Lyric fell down the steps with a belt around her neck,'" Veronica McGee recalled.

He told that same story to police and hospital workers, but doctors advised Lyric’s injuries were inconsistent with that story.

Presley later told investigators he was the only person in the house and was in charge of caring for this daughter when "he himself inflicted several injuries."

Presley was charged with aggravated child abuse before Lyric died, and police said the charges may be enhanced.

He has since bonded out of Shelby County Jail.

The funeral home that held Lyric’s services said she was just buried Tuesday.

Early Wednesday, Veronica McGee posted a picture of herself on Facebook with the following words:

“The pain I endure only makes me strong as a person. I know my health is important, but my baby girl was more important. Now that everything is over with and she's resting well, Mommy can get her self taken care of. #‎amotherb4anything”

Veronica McGee was in the hospital when the Facebook picture was taken. She died later in the day.
