An Indianapolis woman was charged with attempted murder after police say she left her newborn baby in a trash can.
According to the Indianapolis Star, Briana Holland, 22, was charged Wednesday with one count of attempted murder, one count of child battery and four counts of neglect.
Holland reportedly gave birth to the boy in a bathroom at United Technology Carrier Corp., where she was an employee, on Aug. 1, according to WTHR. The baby had an object stuck in his mouth, toilet paper wrapped around his neck and a paper bag over his head, police said.
A maintenance worker found the infant still alive, wrapped him in a vest and got help. The baby is currently being treated at a nearby hospital.
Indiana is a "safe haven" state, meaning a baby under 30 days old can be dropped off at a police station, fire station or emergency room. The trash can where the infant was left was right across the street from a fire station.
