At least one of two boys who are missing off the Florida Coast didn't have permission to be on the ocean, The Palm Beach Post reported Tuesday.
The stepfather of missing teen Perry Cohen, Nick Korniloff, said Perry was only allowed on the Loxahatchee River, in the Jupiter Inlet and on the Intracoastal Waterway.
“It was a surprise to us to know he went offshore,” Korniloff told The Palm Beach Post exclusively Tuesday morning.
Korniloff said both boys completed their boating safety requirements. Florida requires anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, piloting a vessel of more than 10 horsepower complete a boater-safety course and final exam. Both boys' families say they're experienced boaters and anglers and strong swimmers.
The U.S. Coast Guard announced Tuesday morning it moved its entire search to Southern Georgia. Search and rescue teams have covered more than 28,000 square nautical miles.
Austin Stephanos and Perry Cohen, both 14, haven’t been seen since Friday. Their boat was found Sunday 67 miles off the coast of Volusia County.
Neighbors say all the kids in the waterfront neighborhood spend time on boats, even as infants, and learn respect for the water at a young age.
