The 18-year-old high school senior who made headlines last week after it was discovered that he was abducted by his father in 2002 has spoken.

In a statement, Julian Hernandez pleads with the media to give him and his family and friends privacy. “I just want to be left alone,” the statement reads.

AL.com reports that the statement was released Friday through the FBI.

The missing child case was solved when Hernandez began the college application process, and there was an issue with his social security number. In 2002, Hernandez was abducted by his father, taken from his mother’s home in Alabama. The father and son began a new life in Ohio, where he was located.

Father Bobby Hernandez has been charged with interference of child custody, a felony. He will be held without bond once he is transferred to Alabama.

The mother of Bobby Hernandez also released a statement, expressing that the family is overjoyed that her son has been found safe. Police told AL.com that mother and son have spoken, but it is not known if they’ve met in person yet.
