The Clorox Co. is voluntarily recalling three types of drain clog removers after a packaging defect made the products easy for children to get into.
The drain cleaners can cause chemical burns and irritation to the skin and eyes, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Three types of Liquid Plumr fall under the recall: Pro-Strength Foaming Clog Fighter, Industrial Strength Urgent Clear and Pro-Strength Urgent Clear. In total, the recall includes 5.4 million bottles of drain cleaner, all manufactured before March 22, 2016.
"We have received some reports of child-resistant closures that are not working properly as well as reports of bottles leaking on Liquid-Plumr Urgent Clear and Liquid-Plumr Foaming Clog Fighter in market," the Clorox Co. said in a recall notice.
The drain cleaners all contain sodium hydroxide, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said. Under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act, the chemical requires the products to have child-resistant packaging.
The Clorox Co. has gotten eight reports of child-resistant bottle caps working incorrectly and 221 reports of bottles leaking as of Thursday, according to the company. No injuries have been reported.
The clog removers were sold at various retailers nationwide between January 2012 and May 2016, according to Clorox. The company released the following UPCs for the affected products:
Liquid Plumr Pro-Strength Foaming Clog Fighter (formerly sold as Slow Flow Fighter), described as an orange bottle with a red cap – UPC 44600-00214
Liquid Plumr Pro-Strength Urgent Clear, described as a blue bottle with a red cap – UPC 44600-30548
Liquid Plumr Industrial Strength Urgent Clear, described as a black bottle with a red cap – UPC 44600-31484
Product UPCs can be found on the back of the bottles, in the lower left corner.
Any customers who have the affected products were advised to keep the bottle away from children and contact The Clorox Company's Liquid Plumr call center at 855-490-0705 for disposal and refund instructions.
