Kahlil Ellison, 23, of Pontiac, pleaded no contest last month to one count of assault of a pregnant person that caused a miscarriage or stillborn birth, the newspaper reported.

At a preliminary hearing in February, Ellison's girlfriend testified the couple was fighting over her cellphone. According to the woman, Ellison grabbed her by the ankles and pulled her off a bed onto the floor, where he began kicking her in the abdomen, the Press reported.

The woman, who was six months pregnant at the time, was taken to the hospital after experiencing pain. The unborn baby was pronounced dead, the newspaper reported.
