Two Metro transit trains collide in Washington, D.C., causing deaths and multiple fatalities.

One Metro transit train smashed into the rear of another at the height of D.C's Monday evening rush hour, killing at least six people and injuring scores of others as the front end of the trailing train jackknifed into the air and fell atop the first.

Passengers who climbed out of the wreckage described a violent crash, according to Washington Post reports. "All I heard was a boom," said Dylan Hooks, 17, who said he was on one of the trains. "Everybody started screaming. Somebody hit their head on the glass." The electricity went off. Passengers had to open the doors.

The crash occurred just before 5 p.m. between stations on the above-ground public transit line near Takoma Park, Md.

D.C. Fire and Emergency workers remove an unidentified person from the site of the collision.

Officials say it's unclear what caused the deadly rush-hour collision. A train operator was among the dead, officials said.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators takes photographs of the wreckage. One subway car sat fully on top of a car from the other train. One of the trains had part of its roof sheared off, but the wreckage was a jumble of twisted metal. Seats from the smashed cars had spilled onto the tracks.

Late into the evening, D.C. Fire and Emergency workers were removing victims from the site of the collision.
