A memorial service for slain K-9 officer Aren was held Thursday at the Allegheny County Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial.
Transit police say the 5-year-old German shepherd was stabbed in the mouth by 37-year-old Bruce Kelley Jr., who was fatally shot by officers in the process. County police and the district attorney are reviewing the shooting.
Police say the deadly altercation happened after Kelley and his father, 60-year-old Bruce Kelley Sr., fought with police who found the father and son drinking in a gazebo Sunday afternoon.
Nearly 150 law enforcement vehicles lined up on the East Busway for a procession that stretched a half-mile.
While police prepared for Aren’s memorial, a local group was calling for changes.
The Alliance for Police Accountability says Kelley’s death was unwarranted.
According to the group, the officers’ actions violated the crime code since Kelley injured an animal and not a human.
"The use of deadly force was used to save the life of an animal, and I don't think that that really makes moral sense, but I also don't think it goes along with the crime code,” Alliance for Police Accountability President Brandi Fisher said.
Fisher said she thinks police should stop using K-9s altogether.
