Greg Mahle has helped give an estimated 30,000 dogs a new lease on life.
Mahle runs Rescue Road Trips, a nonprofit group that works to unite dogs in pounds with people ready to adopt them in other states for nearly a decade.
"A short while ago, all of these dogs were someone's trash," Mahle said to KVUE. "They were thrown out. They were abandoned. They've been abused."
Adopters find the animals through petfinder.com and arrange for Mahle to transport them. He charges a flat fee of $185 for a dog of any size.
He usually starts his drive from Ohio to Texas on Tuesdays. The trip continues from Texas to New York, some 3,800 miles, with plenty of stops to give the dogs a break. Mahle does this about 25 times a year. He transports somewhere between 80 to 120 dogs each trip, according to KVUE.
"You try to get by this week, and hope to get by next week," Mahle said to KVUE. "And you're doing all of this for the love the dogs."
