A Mobile, Alabama, teacher's math quiz Friday turned out to be racist and offensive.
The quiz contained math questions that referenced drugs and prostitution and included stereotypical names.
WPMI reported that the quiz emerged online years ago as the"City of Los Angeles High School Math Proficiency Exam" as an attempt to make fun of crime and gang violence affecting the city.
Cranford Burns Middle School eighth-grade teacher JoAnne Bolser is responsible for distributing the quiz, according to WPMI.
Bolster is set to retire at the end of this month, according to WPMI.
The school board put her on administrative leave after the quiz incident.
Parent Erica Hall said she was shocked when her son sent her photos of the quiz.
"They took it as a joke, and she told them that it wasn't a joke, and they had to complete it and turn it in," Hall said.
One student, who only wanted to be identified as Elizabeth said she was "shocked because she's a strict teacher."
"The principal looked into it and then our school resource officer investigated it and then we immediately put the teacher on administrative leave," Rena Philips, the school's director of communications, told NBC News.
Philips said Hall and her husband were the only parents who complained to the school. They came to the school and spoke with the principal Tuesday.
"We regret that this happened so close to the end of the school year. Today was the last day of school," Philips told NBCBLK. "The vast majority of (our teachers) are doing an outstanding job. So it's unfortunate that this news is overshadowing the work that they're doing every day."
Philips said she is not sure if Bolser will appeal the school board's decision to place her on leave.
