The Miami Marlins have fired manager Mike Redmond, the team announced Sunday.
The firing followed a 6-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves at Marlins Park, in which Atlanta pitcher Shelby Miller came within two outs of a no-hitter against Miami.
The team is 16-22 after Sunday’s loss, 5.5 games behind the NL East-leading New York Mets. The team entered the season with high expectations, with some even seeing them as a potential playoff team.
There was no immediate word about who would replace Redmond, although media reports suggested a new manager would be named Monday morning. The team plays Monday night at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Third base coach Rob Leary also was fired immediately after the game.
Redmond, 44, was the catcher on the 2003 Marlins World Series team. He went 155-207 in two-plus seasons as Marlins manager. It was his first managing job in Major League Baseball.
Sunday’s loss completed a three-game sweep by the Braves.
