One Marine has been killed and several others were hurt when a helicopter made a hard landing at Camp Lejeune in eastern North Carolina.
Capt. Ryan Elizabeth Alvis said in a statement that the CH-53E helicopter came down hard during a training exercise around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Alvis said the name of the dead Marine will not be released for 24 hours.
Alvis said a number of the injured were taken to the Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune. Others were taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville and one was sent to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
Alvis said the landing is being investigated. No other information was immediately available.
According to WCTI, Camp Lejeune officials confirmed that the helicopter was based at Marine Corp Air Station New River and the crash was reported in the Stones Bay area.
The helicopter belonged to the Heavy Helicopter Squadron-464, Marine Aircraft group-29, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.
WCTI was reporting that according to the Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, after the accident one service member was transferred via MEDEVAC and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Officials said six were evaluated and are scheduled for release, while one was admitted and is reportedly in stable condition. Additionally, three service members were transferred to Onslow County Memorial Hospital and are in stable condition.
Officials also said one service member was being taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
