A man suffered injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening Monday after he was bit by a small shark while standing in knee-deep water on Sullivan's Island in South Carolina.

The 35-year-old man, who was not identified, was "nipped" by a shark estimated to be 3 to 4 feet long, The Associated Press reported. The man was on vacation with his wife, who was not injured. Authorities took him to a hospital to treat his wounds.

Sullivan's Island fire and police departments arrived at the beach around 4:20 p.m. Monday after receiving a report of the bite, according to WCBD.

The shark attack was reported just hours after visitors were told they could return to the water. Officials confirmed around 11:30 a.m. Monday that an alligator spotted nearby earlier in the day had been captured.
