Build up your retirement "nest egg" or help a 4-year-old with spinal muscular atrophy? Nat Ellis decided on the latter.
According to The Huffington Post, Ellis is sell his prized toy collection on eBay in order to help Logan Roninger get a new wheelchair that can help him with mobility.
Logan has spinal muscular atrophy, a neuromuscular disorder that causes muscle weakness. He is unable to "crawl, walk, or dress himself without assistance and the condition will eventually affect swallowing and respiratory functions," according to The Huffington Post.
Logan’s parents say he loves playing outdoors and having adventures, but his current wheelchair gives him limited access to certain outdoor areas. According to the Roninger family, their local community had been holding fundrasiers to help them buy a Tankchair, which is a wheelchair that would allow Logan to cut through more rugged and sandy terrain. With a price tag of $17,000, they needed help. The chair is not covered by insurance, according to The Huffington Post.
Ellis, a 50-year-old teacher from Oregon, has been collecting toys from fast food restaurants for 25 years and was planning to sell the toys and put the cash toward his retirement, but he heard of the fundraisers and decided to help.
According to Today, Ellis sold the collection on eBay, but the winner, Ruth Olsen, donated it back to Ellis for a second auction. As of now, the community has raised $11,000 for Logan's chair with the next auction for Ellis' toys being June 16, according to The Huffington Post.
