A Rhode Island man was injured while making homemade fireworks in his garage Sunday, West Warwick police said.

The man was using a significant amount of chemicals to make the fireworks, police said. His hand was seriously injured and the garage majorly damaged in the explosion.

Officials at the scene said the remainder of the explosive chemicals were destroyed behind the home after the neighborhood was evacuated.

The 40-year-old man was the only person injured. Officials said they do not believe there is any connection to terrorism.
