An Oklahoma man searching for mushrooms on Sunday instead found human remains, according to police.

Eufaula police said the mushroom hunter was searching for morel mushrooms in a wooded area behind some businesses when he made the grisly discovery. News on 6 in Tulsa reported that the man went to police to report finding the bone.

Responding officers found additional bones scattered in the woods. An officer stayed overnight at the scene until the medical examiner and agents from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation could respond Monday morning.

Eufaula police Chief Don Murray said the skeletal remains appear to be those of a man. The chief said that he believes the person was likely a transient visiting Eufaula’s lake.

News on 6 in Tulsa reported that there is just one unresolved missing person case in the area, that of Peggy McGuire. McGuire, 28, was last seen in November 2015 dropping her young son off at school near Eufaula.

According to NBC News, her truck was parked in the parking lot of a local bar around 5 the next morning. Surveillance footage caught the grainy image of a man walking away from the vehicle.

McGuire's family initially hoped that the remains found Sunday might bring an end to their search. Her mother, Betty Davis, told News on 6 that she wished the bones had been those of her daughter because it would have given her some relief.

"It hurts knowing that we may never find her," Davis told the news station.

She also posted the news on a Facebook page dedicated to finding McGuire.

“Today is another day gone by not knowing,” Davis wrote. “The human remains found in Eufaula was not our Peggy! We pray for justice and closure everyday!”

The chief said the discovery of the bones is being treated as a homicide investigation.
