Bryan Miller was stopping by a nearby Walmart to get barbecue sauce for his family dinner.
He added a $20 scratch-off ticket for the $200 Million Blowout game and ended up winning $1 million.
"I went for barbecue sauce and came back with the million," Miller said in a statement posted to the North Carolina Education Lottery site. "You can't beat that."
Winners have two options to get their prize. It can be claimed as a $50,000-a-year annuity for 20 years or as a $600,000 lump sum.
Miller, who repairs machines for a disaster recovery service, chose the cash option, which came out to $415,506 after state and federal tax withholding. He said he plans on using the winnings to pay off the mortgage on his family's house and save for his daughter's college education.
