State Police in Maine said the first fatal car crash involving a moose in the state this year happened Friday night along a highway in Medway.

Donnie Wilcox, 57, of Winslow, was driving around 10 p.m. when his Subaru hit a moose in the southbound travel lane along I-95, according to police.

Upon impact, the moose flew into the windshield and peeled off the back of the car's roof.

The car was found by passersby shortly after it happened, but police said there were no witnesses at the time of the accident.

Both Wilcox and the moose died on the scene.
