A luxury home that sits on the edge of a crumbling cliff has started falling into a Texas lake.
According to WFAA-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth, the 4,000-square-foot house on Lake Whitney was condemned about a year ago after officials noticed a large crack in the 75-foot cliff. The owners moved out two weeks ago after they were told to evacuate, the Hill County Sheriff's Office said.
Part of the cliff collapsed Tuesday evening.
"I immediately thought it was an earthquake or blasting; it was loud, really loud," neighbor Connie Ash told the TV station.
A chunk of the $700,000 house broke off a few hours later, deputies said.
Authorities told KTVT that Army Corps of Engineers officials are inspecting the property and keeping boaters away from the area.
“We’re looking at a number of things, including erosion, load that’s on the top from watering and rain, the actual fault, and some fill material with a retaining wall that was placed in there," said Randy Cephus with the Fort Worth District of the Army Corp of Engineers.
WFAA-TV said the owners will be responsible for cleaning up the site.
